Because it's a rude thing to say.

Not to me it isn't. Cursing God is rude and sacrilegious. Taking Gods name in surprise is not sacrilegious or blasphemous. Its a petty offense, if at all offensive.

Again - God is grown up enough to sort this Herself if She so desires. She will smite you is you annoy Her, She will thwart you if She does not want you to say it. Have faith in Her omnipresence and her omnipotence.

Why should one not use it in profanity? For the same reason one should not use profanity - it is crass.

Love this. Sensible. Reasonable.

I get this, pp, but its still not a big sin for me. Many people say omg and do not believe in God. Its not said with intent to demean God.

So I read up on this a little bit and its one of the Ten Commandments. But it was intended for situations where people took the name of the Lord in false oaths or cursing at a situation (

I was raised Catholic and "Oh, My God" was okay in particular dire circumstances--you almost had an accident, you were just told you have cancer etc.--where it would be shorthand for calling upon God's help.

Even Jesus used this expression: "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

In French, "Mon Dieu," is pretty much universally used, including among children and could often be translated into an English equivalent as "my goodness" rather than "My God."

I tend to say "O my gosh," but I probably say OMG about once a day and confess to pretty liberal use of "Good Lord."

OP here. I like this advice, pp.

What if someone said "Oh, my God is an awesome God!"

or

"My God will lead a crusade against your fatwa." (Well, maybe not.)

Surely you see the difference between "Oh my God!" as an exclamation or figure of speech and "Oh, my God..." as the beginning of a sentence about your God.

As with everything, different people have different religious traditions. Just as many Jewish people might write G-d instead of spell it out correctly, some Christians think "Oh my God" or "Jesus Christ!" is sacrilegious. I do. There are a lot of things my children aren't allowed to say that their friends say, this is just one of them. Not a big deal to some, and not a big deal to us either, really. We just don't do it.

Just don't do it. People do get wrapped up in this, especially if you are at a religious school. It's just not good form. Evangelicals, Anglicans, Epis., Jews, and CAtholics can get very offended by this. I was even called out in a law firm setting for saying something like that. Just train yourself to say something else like "Sweet Fancy Moses".

When children use it they sound crass. Regardless of religion I expect my child not to sound crass.

Here's what those two little girls need to understand: If something is against their religion, then it's for THEM to do or not do. They don't get to try to force ANYONE ELSE to conform to THEIR religion. Best they learn this now.

Priests and Rabbis have pretty thick skin.

I just think that's disrespectful to someone who's made God their life's work, you know?

Have you listened to priests and rabbis talk? Do you think they don't know how other people talk?
