Last year I was in court for a custody issue and when my lawyer mentioned I had a HHI of $150K, the judge promptly reminded us that $150K is not a lot of money in this area (I live in N. Arlington). And here I thought I was doing well.
Honestly it depends when you bought your house. If you are first time home buyer with little down you are going to feel poor but if you bought before 2004 and have a low payment you are fine.
its not like every house bought before 2004 was cheap. just saying
If you bought your house before 2004 a salary of median income today would be able to get you a decent North Arlington home.
doesn't change the fact that you can still have a sizable mortgage payment even if you bought before 2004
Shoulda woulda coulda, point is that a 150 HHI doesn't mean you are less wealthy than someone with a 300 HHI if you have lower housing costs.
Family A buys home for 300K has a 1800/month mortgage
Family B buys same home 10 years later for 800k has a 4000/month mortgage
there is no way I would buy an 800k house even if I could - a 4000k mortgage is insane. its a choice and there are perfectly nice homes in our neighborhood for 450k.
