Yes, probably. I feel pretty confident that I would not kick someone in shins. I would cry if I knew I was about to be beheaded. I think most people would.

I suspect there is some other prisoner--possibly a woman or child, off camera, that they are abusing and they use the threat of causing that person more pain or less pain as a tool to control the victim.

OP - DH and I said the same thing this morning after seeing the report about the British prisoner. He said - I don't understand why these guys are trying to fight back...even though they know they can't win or get away.

I get what you're trying to say and I don't think that what you said was insensitive. You merely said what many others are thinking. You weren't being disrespectful IMHO.
