When I first joined this gym - shortly after it opened - I was not sure how long they would last at this sort of pricing.
I talked to a couple of people in the know and their business model is interesting.
They make a fair amount of money from the percentage that they get to keep from personal trainers who work at the gym. But the other aspect is that over two-thirds of their membership hardly ever uses the gym but they keep paying the $10 because it is an inconsequential amount. They also charge $29 annually which is a fee that is paid to ensure the member gets to keep the $10 rate as long as they are a member.
The number of cancellations of membership is minimal because the fee is so low and members would just like to keep the option open to use the gym even if they don't do so with any regularity.
