You have to look at schools department by department and even subspecialty by subspecialty. DH leftt a school dcumers would prefer for UMD because UMD is ranked #1 in his specialization. The grad students he gets here are phenomenal and his ability to get funding has improved because of the ranking of UMD in his specialization.

I agree the campus is fugly. I really miss our old location.

Maryland is not a Big Ten or Eleven or Thirteen or whatever they are school. It will always be a second-tier ACC school known for rioting after regular season wins.

LOL!! So true!!

I thought UMD Booster was going to call it a Big 3 school now.

#1 MD student do care about sports. They have just as much pride in their sports team as other Div 1 schools. #2 as a Michigan Alum I can tell you there are plenty of things to do other than watch sports. While I had foodball tickets all 4 years I also had friends who could care less about sports and still had plenty of ways to fill their time. Ann Arbor is a fantastic college town.

It is possible to have pride in your school without putting down another.

"College Town". That says it all. As for Maryland having pride in their D1 sports - you mean their remaining D1 sports as they have had to shut down so many for lack of support. The track team barely survived getting axed. Doesn't sound like a campus big on sports.

And yet it has the most national championships in the ACC . The other schools must have mentally handicapped administrations.

Sorry, NOT the most innovative and influential alumni in the ACC. Yes, there are bright spots in the UMD alumni group - as there are for every ACC school, even Pitt (God help them). But despite the most fervent wishes of UMD Booster, UMD does not have the "brand recognition" or prestige of a Duke, Virginia or even UNC. It just doesn't. There are issues at every school, including those I just named, but MD is not immune to them and while it's certainly a good school with a solid reputation, it's honestly no better than lots of other state schools like UVA, Michigan, UT, Berkeley even William & Mary.

And its campus is fugly.

It's honestly not remotely comparable to any of those great state schools you mentioned. Those are all public ivies.
