Everyone tips, its fairly customary in small Jewish camps. However, I did not tip at a gymnastics camp, a school based camp, or at Lego camp.


I was a lifelong camper at Jewish camps, and then a counselor, and I never received a tip from anyone. Not customary, at least in the midwest where I grew up.

I think it's a nice gesture, though, and the $10-20 amount sounds just fine.

Welcome to real world lady. If you frequent a restaurant, every waiter there knows what the regulars tip. The counselors are up in middle of night sometimes, dealing with home sickness, etc. Tip and tip well.

We tip $20 to counselors that spend a good amount of time with our kids. I don't think most people do, but it's appreciated. I have the kids write a short thank you note for them and tuck in a gift card.

To answer OP's actual question, I think $20 is fine. Our kids' day camp says tipping is not expected but if you want to they suggest $5-20 per counselor.

Yes. When I worked at an overnight camp while in college we would get anything from a box of cookies, to socks, to cash (ranging from $10-$60) as tips. It was always nice to receive a tip, and somewhat expected because that was the culture of the camp, but some families didn't tip and that was fine too.

I am a former camp director and have worked at both sleepaway and day camps. I have never heard of parents giving tips. I think that's nuts, personally.

I wouldn't tip the CITs. Just tip the counselors. Depending on the number of counselors you have, I'd do $20 a head.

I don't think you need to tip the Division head -- that sounds like a more professional position that wouldn't require tipping.
