This!

I just say "We're fine. We'll let you know if we need anything."

And if the server comes back again after that and asks, we just look at him/her and say nothing, or ignore them. They get the picture.

I am VERY polite to waitstaff otherwise, but when I already told you to lay off, you'd better lay off.

Totally hate that. Like they're implying you shouldn't have the plate in front of you still.

They do this because they are putting you in one server's zone of tables. If you're eating early, they may not have all the zones open.

+1. I had a waiter at Coastal Flats on time who was so intrusive that I finally asked him to please leave us alone. We were not there to talk to him.

It's a tactic to turn the table. If you respond that you are taking your time with dinner, the waiter will usually back off.
