this - drinking is exacerbated in non-urban colleges.

Not really. It is just isn't hidden like in urban colleges. They have to throw a party instead of going clubbing. In both environments you can find a cadre of friends who match your interests.

If you go "clubbing" you still need an ID to drink.

I've had friends and family and rural/isolated schools, but I think the difference is fraternities. Where the Greek system is the main social system, the drinking seems to be more prevalent.

About 30% of students don't drink at college.

I teach at a college and I often show my students some of the ACHA stats to let them know about the wide range of normal and typical behavior at college - you can act or not act in many ways and many others are doing the same.

ACHA Results are here: http://www.acha-ncha.org/reports_ACHA-NCHAII.html

If you look at the undergraduate reference group - alcohol related questions start on page 18 I think. The questions before that ask what they think a typical students does. Those are also interesting because their perceptions of what others do is very 'off' compared to what students actually report.

Go looking for trashy stuff on the internet and you will find it. Why make this part of your experience? Why would you think this will be part of your child's experience?

People who are so afraid of deviant behavior, frankly instead seem to be fascinated by it.

I don't understand how guys don't walk around with hard-ons at ASU all the time. It is by far the most attractive/sluttiest college in this country.

He'll find people he gets along with--not everyone is into getting shitfaced every weekend and some people don't drink in college. Or maybe he'll find people that he enjoys having a few beers with and letting loose a bit in environments that aren't fratty red cup parties. It's not all or nothing.

My kids are not drinkers. No problem. I never drank in college. Made up for it later in life, though, hah! Now none of us drink, which just makes life easier and no temptations. I've discovered as I age that even a glass of white wine sets off my need for munchies. I can't fight the battle of the bulge and take in unnecessary carbs at the same time.

He goes to parties, if he wants. He holds a red cup - which can have anything in it. He laughs, he socializes, he makes friends. He makes friends doing other things too.

It's not all or nothing. It's not every weekend. It's not drunk all the time. It's not everyone.
