OK, I feel horrible now . ..

What percentage of your salary are you putting in now? You are making decent money, you can catch up. Better to kick it into gear at 40 then at 50!

For comparison to you 37 year olds, a decade ago I had 60K.

I think you're doing great! 47, 14 years, 388k here.

I think you are both doing very well. If you work for another 17 years you'll also get a very decent pension plus SS so your TSP balance should hopefully be a very stable leg of your three legged stool. My goal is to have the TSP annuity (figure 4% of the TSP balance paid out each year) cover around 33% of my working income. Right now - not quite making it but you two should be getting close. Good luck

how the hell did you increase your retirement savings by 330k in 10 years? are there different contribution limits for TSPs or something?

Nope. It's the market. About 10 years ago we were coming off of an abysmal period for all earnings. I'm a different poster, but I remember being "stuck" at 175k for years, even with new additions and matching. Or member thinking "I'd have been better off taking the money and sticking it under my mattress". But with matching and much better 10 year returns, you can have made that much. Good stock market plus compounding.....

I'm the poster who increased savings by $330K in 10 years. Saved about 12% of my salary (averaging about 7% contribution, plus the 5% match), and a lot of help from the markets and compound interest. I went from $60K in July 2004 to $165K in July 2009 to $330K now - doubling the value of my account in the last five years. Thanks Obama!
