Yes, not a chance of an earthquake in NoVa- like the ones we had in 2011. The epicenter was in Mineral (Lake Ana). That's scary about the brain eating amoeba - thanks for the warning.

I'm the PP that asked about dogs. My shepherd ventures into the water any time we let him (although we've never let him actually swim thus far), so I'm thinking he'll be gung ho about Lake Anna. The human kid's the same (although she's two and can't yet swim, so we'll keep an eye on her). Thanks!

My impression from visiting is that there is a manmade sand beach at the state park where kids can swim, most of the lake edge is mud bottom with some rocky areas, it gets deep pretty fast, it's got big beautiful trees around it, it's greenish and warmer than Deep Creek Lake, and there are plenty of parts of the lake where you cannot see the nuclear power plant at all. Good place if your kids already know how to swim. Virginia has nice waterfalls but the lakes are all man made and not really comparable to what you'd find in Minnesota, New Hampshire, or even the Sierra Nevada in terms of clarity and rocky shore beauty.

Dogs love Lake Anna. We happen to have two Cockapoos and for whatever reason they do not venture into the lake even though our home is waterfront. However, many of my friends have dogs that love to swim and they do it every chance they get.

As for buying a house near a nuclear plant, those that don't want to don't have to. There are thousands that have and many more will. Fortunately we have a home here and wouldn't trade being at Lake Anna for any other place.

NP. Maybe wrong forum, but would Lake Anna be a nice place to take dogs? We are new to the area and one of our neighbors recommended it for dogs, but would like to hear others' opinions as well. Are dogs allowed in the lake? We have a toddler and large, energetic young dog. TIA!

Lake Anna does have horseback riding (there is a place on Courthouse Road) and gift shops. While we do not have a water park or carnival rides we are about 40 minutes away from Kings Dominion.

Perhaps Lake Anna might work for you after all and you'll consider coming here in the future.

I thought about taking a vacation there, but we have 2 little kids. It would be nice for just me and my dh, but for the kids, they want water parks, carnival rides, gift shops, horseback riding. That sort of thing. We are going to Massanutten resort instead.

I've lived at Lake Anna full time for 22 years now and I can attest to it being a beautiful place. Most of the lake is not crowded on weekends. Yes, it is busy on holiday weekends but people should expect that.

I have been a REALTOR here for 19 years and have some many, many homes. Not one home owner has come to me and complained about not being able to enjoy the lake.

As for drunk boaters that can happen anywhere. There are plenty of drunk drivers on the roads to. I'm not condoning this because it is definitely the wrong thing to do but Lake Anna is no different from any other place.

It's a great place for fishing, swimming, kayaking, water skiing, and a number of other water related activities.
