Wow, that is crazy. Actually there are a bunch of studies on how IVF babies are more likely to have issues. I know because I have an IVF son, who BTW is no genius

Sounds like you just need to be blunt with her and tell her to stop.

Your SIL sounds like a complete idiot. Take the high road and ignore her.

I would just refuse to engage. Who cares what she thinks?

Whenever she brings up how smart her kid is, just agree with her. "Yep, he's a smarty." Very matter of factly. It's not your job to educate her.

How about "Oh did you use a donor egg?"

Don't they screen donors and accept only from donors who fit certain profiles like age, race, physical attributes, IQ and profession? Maybe she got it from that.

+1 Too funny!

I would be seriously ticked off and might sink to a low level and say something about her infertility.

Take the high road and do not do this.

I would just say, "Yes, I've heard you say that many times. It must be important to you." And then change the subject.

Agree that she's insecure. But why not just calmly call her out on it, OP? "Larla, you keep bringing this up over and over. It's not normal, and it makes it clear that something's bothering you about the IVF process. Would you like to talk about what's bothering you?" From now on, try to come at it from a place of sympathy. Maybe her kid is smarter than yours, maybe she isn't. But your SIL seems to be trying to claim some kind of ownership and control over her reproductive process and the genetic cast of the dice. Hopefully she'll grow out of it. If she doesn't stop with the comments, then just completely stop reacting or responding to them. Not even monosyllabic responses. Just change the subject and act like she never said anything.

Seriously.

We have an IVF baby and it would have never even occurred to me that someone would think something this idiotic.

Your SIL sounds mentally unstable.

She sounds insecure or ignorant.
