Mine did the exact same motorcycle thing at that age. I thought it was weird too and everyone mentioned it, but he eventually stopped and now he's a perfectly normal 2.5 year old.

Even at 16 months, my dd does some weird repetitive hand motions sometimes when she is excited about something. I take note, but I can't get too worried when she is so socially interactive. I recommend continuing to look at the big picture.

My kid did that a lot at that age. She's now 13 months and hasn't done it for at least a month or two. Now that's she's walking she has moved on to systematically destroying our house!

Dh and I were just laughing about our 8 mi kid who started doing this again. I think he's trying to learn how to wave. We've been doing a lot of waving lately.

I doubt it is anything more than your son figured out how to twirl his wrists and he likes the feeling - for now.
+1 My son spent a few months talking under his breath like that kid from "The Middle." Freaked me out but he eventually stopped doing it. An 8 month old is learning new things they can do everyday. If development is otherwise normal I'd say this is nothing to concern yourself with.

I remember the long thread on babies who do this. Yes, some of the kids were on the spectrum; other's not. So you'll probably freak yourself out a little reading it. My guess is you have nothing to worry about.

OP, my son did the exact same thing when he was about that age and it caught my attention, too.
He is now 17 and not on the spectrum in any way... it was just a fun new habit he picked up at the time and it eventually faded away.
