We have a similar situation with our in-laws...they make really hurtful comments about my husband. We have tried talking, explaining, everything we could think of. We have then sat down with them and said plain and simple: "From now on, whenever you say anything hurtful, we will get up and leave." We have since gotten up and left, whenever they said anything. They stopped VERY fast.

I think with pathological racists that's the only way to go. Sit down with them and say: "We do not want our children to grow up racist. We do not want them to be exposed to people who think racist comments are okay. From now on, whenever you say something racist, we will get up and leave. If you are at our house, you will be required to get up an leave." Then act upon it every singl time, no matter how long it takes.

Are you nonwhite? If not, how did you come to be so sure of what happens when nonwhites get together?

I am not white and when my family gets together, we have better things to do than make racist comments about white people. This simply doesn't happen during our time together.
