OP,

The same bad timing happened to us 2 years ago.

Actually, I had just given birth, we had just signed on the house, and DH lost his job!!!

Perfect storm.

I wish you the best of luck. Hang in there.

I really appreciate this thread. I have severance. It sees me through the end of August. Just see money pouring out, home inspection, camps for kids, radon inspection. . .feeling a little spooked.

+1. Hold off on getting new furniture and home improvements. Have a little housewarming for your family and friends. You'll be ok!

i'm sorry OP.

This fear of mine is what stops me from buying. I'm not surprised that under 40%of those under 35 are on the property ladder.

Forget having the assets to even get on the ladder (which many young ones lack), the psychological scarring the financial contraction post 2008 has produced will reverberate IMO long after and shape the tastes and financial decision making of the sub 35 generation.

It will be very interesting to see the implications of this 20-30 years from now. Behavioral Economics is very powerful.

Sorry OP! Network like crazy - I'm sure your friends will feel for you and do what they can to help you get your foot in the door somewhere. Post it on facebook, shout to the mountaintops that you just bought a house and need work ASAP.

Also, maybe this could be an opportunity for you to rearrange and do something you may not have done before, like something you would enjoy more.

Good luck!

It's a total bummer OP. Let us know what field you're in and we can send links of job openings.

I lost my lobbying job some years ago and had to totally reinvent myself. It took a year to find another job and it
was really hard. Hang in there and get really active on Linkedin if you are not already.

What line of work are you in?

are you the sole breadwinner?

do you have small children at home?

Anonymous wrote:It happened to us last year. Spouse lost his job 6 months after moving to new house, with 50% increase in our mortgage. He just started back working a year later. At least we are a two income family, so all worked out fine. And, I am still glad we moved. I will live with financial insecurtiy for many years to come, now, and would never have had the courage to move, if he lost the job earlier.

Similar thing happened to us in 2003. Just bought our "forever dream home" in our "dream neighborhood" - big jump in mortgage as well. DH was laid off 4 months later. I had just had my son. it sucked because we used a lot of our liquid funds to redo floors, paint, carpet etc. He was in a very specialized field with not too many local options. I went back to work after it became clear that it was going to take a while for him to find another job. 13 months later he got a great offer and we moved out of DC. Sold our home for $400K more than we had bought it for just one year before. We bought at the bottom and right before the market went nuts in DC.

OP it will be ok. Its hard to see that while you're in it but once you get another job you'll realize that it happened for a good reason. maybe your dream job is around the corner.

What work do you do? I know jobs can be scarce and a friend just emailed a bunch of us that she's hiring.

Will you be able to afford the house, without the job, OP?
