OP, I'm sorry to break the news to you, but you are not newly poor. I'm sure your parents wanted you to think as much, but unless they were old money -- and you basically admitted they were not with the **cough**cough** "pyramid scheme" information you shared -- then you cannot be newly poor. You are simply poor, without the back story. Such a shame. And you seemed so ladylike and genteel too.

GASP. PP, are you saying that I am lying? I will not STAND for this attack on my character! **Rifles through space bag to find a winter glove to slap pp with**

My parents were both, indeed, raised under a material standard that I would call "old money." Multiple servants, private schooling, a 7 bedroom house, fine furniture, a horse, etc. When my grandmother died my father inherited an entire apartment building in a large city.

AND NOW IT IS ALL GONE.

My dear, those apartment buildings in eastern bloc countries are worth pennies on the dollar. And of course they had a horse -- no doubt a cart to go with it. If they had been wealthy, they would have had a pony.

NP here. Genteel poverty, you called?!

Somehow my sister and I each got 5 sets of china and 3-4 sets of silverware, I'm not making this up. We haul out a different set every holiday. But my grandparents managed to spend most of the money.

Oh, I would be delighted to shoot the breeze about my parent's never-ending and increasingly less amusing mishaps, particularly with money.

Once my mother was actually conned into a pyramid scheme, despite being way too educated to fall for something that stupid.

Oh no, I'm sorry but that is tres nouveau riche. Not old money at all.

What was she selling -- Scentsy? Pampered Chef? Stella and Dot? No, that's too modern. Was it -- no, was it Avon?

Oh, but my dear, that is the distinction! We are neither old money nor new money, we are new poor.

And for the life of me I cannot remember what the heck it was she was trying to sell, I was just a kid then but I remember finding it incredibly stupid.

NO!! Never!! We still pretend that we are upper-class.

Good for you. You have class, not wealth. That is something you can never lose. At least not in one generation....

Do you have the fine refined manners to go with it?

People have always told me that's I'm very ladylike. And seriously, I hate those plug in smelly things. Yuck. I would rather bake some cookies to make the house smell cozy.

My grandparents were very accomplished, and my parents - very entitled. As a result, I had to grow up to be very realistic about my finances. My mom still can't understand why I won't buy myself a Lexus.

My mom was like this. Her dad and his family had tons of money (halls at Universities are named after them). Her dad left her mom (SAHM) in the middle of the winter with no heat. Women were pretty discouraged at that time from working (especially with 5 children) so they didn't have any money coming in either. Child support was pretty much not enforced in the 50s either.

OP here. I haven't replied for awhile, but I already think this thread is more interesting than the fake new money lady. Apparently being "new poor" is not all that uncommon.

Yep, the new poor are everywhere! New rich, less of them. genteel poverty -- you go girl!
