This is a good thought. What is his career field and is it one where they may offer voluntary retirements before 20yrs? My DH retired before 20yrs because they were offering retirements rather than separations. His pension is smaller since he didn't retire as on O-6, but it did allow him to move into a solid second career in his 40s.

Is he a member of the Military Officers association (www.moaa.org)? They have a Transition Center that offers career and financial counseling, they could probably help you break down the finances so you get a clear sense of what the impact would be.

Yea, they do. And should. Because of them we do not have a draft and I'm thankful for that. They also suffer a great deal Constant moves, spouses that cannot have careers, PTSD, loss of limb and/or life... Honestly we do not do enough for them.
