Didn't realize these exist... we had security at our last home and paid for a land line. We've been saying we need to set it up at new house but I would love to hook up to cell service.[/quote

Check out SimpliSafe. We've been using it for 2 years and it's awesome. We even just moved it to our new house. Oh the money we waisted...

I recently came across Netflix ISP ratings.

If you select the button at the bottom of the page to include smaller ISP's, RCN is highly rated. I currently have FIOS but plan to switch since they're also about half the price.

Interesting thread. We are in Arlington, with direct tv and verizon DSL and home phone (for security system). After 3+ years of trying to get FIOS we've given up that fight since verizon can't tell us if it will actually ever be available at our address. We are tired of DSL but I am reluctant to get comcast - but I don't think we have any alternatives. We are generally happy with direct tv except for the occasional thunderstorm or snow outage which is annoying. Wish there was another internet alternative.

I'm in the District and get cable internet through Comcast.
It started at $39 month, but that's only good for the first 6 months. It's been creeping up, I then complain, and then give me a different promotional rate. I think we pay close to $60/month for cable internet, once you tack on fees and taxes.
I'd love to quit Comcast, but they are the only who services my apartment building. I could get Verizon DSL, but then I'd have to pay for a phone line, as well, and the speeds are so crappy with DSL.

If RCN provides coverage to your building, I'd highly recommend them. They are much cheaper than Verizon and Comcast and have great customer service.

You also pay for different speeds of internet. People streaming through netflix should be paying a lot of attention to net neutrality and the deals netflix has to make with comcast, etc.
