Subject: pk3 parents - what are you doing with the school you were matched with?
Hi, I'm an actual DCPS EC teacher come to clear up some misinformation about the meaning of different dates.
September 30 - This is a cutoff date for when a child is allowed to turn 3 and be enrolled in a PK3 program. If your child turns three after this date, they are not eligible to be enrolled in a classroom. This date does not signify an end to enrollment. As a public school, we have open enrollment all year long--if we have the space available. One of my students left this past December, and her spot was filled by another family in March.
August dates - We have a brief "transition" period that takes place over the course of two days. During the first week of school, our EC students only attend class on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday, about half of the class is assigned to come to school for the full day (e.g. Let's say students with last names beginning A-L). On Friday, the other half of the class comes (e.g. M-Z last names). On the following Monday, all students are expected to come to class. That's all we have for our transition.
Because of the way in which the lottery system works, and with daily changes to waitlists during this period, spots will fluctuate as there is movement between schools. Several of the students in my classroom this year did not start until mid-September--not because of any transition program, but because that was when space was available for them. Hope this helps!

What are you talking about? What school starts the PK3 kids that late???? Never heard of it.

CHML is a DCPS and phases in PK3 students one per week per class. Everybody posting that thinks they know everything should check their facts first. Ignorance is a choice. Get I formed before making stupid comments and assuming PP is wrong just because you've never heard of it. Who are YOU? Oh yeah, that's right, nobody.

+1…i just confirmed with our charter that the PK3ers are phased in over 3 DAYS.

Please do tell what school phases in PS3 kids one at a time? I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it does sound... odd.

I'm pretty sure Yu Ying had a PS3 playdate last weekend. (I read it on the PA listserv, my DCs are beyond PS3). Sounds like it was at the school, on the playground.

I think they only had one meeting this year, from what I could discern.
Sounds like the school we attend. Maybe there is a more active group for the younger kids. There is plenty of time to be involved when schools starts and lots of volunteers needed. Don't worry too much now.
