Huh? Even the geovernment pays you for unused vacation. Why is this such a sweet benefit?

Must depend on the firm; my biglaw firm did not pay me for unused vacation when I left. I knew this was the policy though so I used up almost all of my vacation prior to leaving.

Duh. The money.

The salary...and it's yearly 20k increase.

Pro bono work.

Great parties, weekends away, baseball tickets, etc all on the firm.

That's true. But still...while he is a slave to the work, he still is treated like a grown up. He doesn't have to ask permission to go to a doctors appointment or step outside for lunch when he wants.

Sure....because all the firm cares about is that he makes his hours and the clients are happy. If that is getting treated like a grown-up - OK (shrugs). I am former Big Law and now in-house and get those same perks that your DH does. I am not a slave though.

we go on vacaton with a partner at one of these firms, during the day he is on his email pretending he is not, taking work calls after we all go to bed he is up all night working. His wife has to drive them around because she is affraid he will fall asleep driving.

sorry but that lifestlye i s not worth it at all.

Highly qualified In-house lawyers handle my divorce, will, house closings, etc. for free.

Maternity leave. 3 month paid plus 3 unpaid. It's just too bad that most women (myself included) pretty much got written off oncw they had kids. There are 3xceptions to this, but they prove the rule.

I agree with most of the PPs about the Big Law perks. I had them and enjoyed them for a while in my 20's, but I moved past them and appreciate a much better work/life balance now. My pay is crap by comparison, but I enjoy my work much more and have my sanity back.

The best perk was actually when I was a summer associate still in law school. Boat cruises, luxury box seats at sporting events, the firm outing to the local country club. Ah, the excess of the 80's!

As a newbie I loved the free meals. Good food, fun restaurants, experienced new dishes etc but I gained 15 pounds and that ended that. Our building did have a gym and things like shoe shining and dry cleaning were covered by the firm which was also very nice. However, I would rather work 45 hours a week and pay for my own food and dry-cleaning and gym membership bc I discovered I am a work to live individual as opposed to live to work. Thus firm life was not for me! Was an interesting life experience though and I do feel firms try and make things as convenient as possible but its not bc they care for you its because they don't want you to leave the office...ever.

This is common in most fields. I've worked on accruing vacation pay/time in some places so that I could have money to move.
