This is crazy. You think there should be a law to keep you from signing something which you read and agreed to?

Before I sign anything, I always read the cancellation policy so I know going into something how I can get out of it.

Don't pay it. Either they'll sue you for it or they won't.

You are probably on the hook, OP, but I bet they will negotiate with you to split the difference.

No. I thought it rolled over to a year to year because every year they send me a new contract. I did not resign last year because we wer contemplating closing the business this year.

I just received a new contract last week, and that is what sparked me to call them to cancel.

No, my position is that a three year automatic renewal under the circumstances listed above (very limited opprotunity and circumstances under which you can cancel, etc) is completely unreasonable and absolutely unethical.

From my googling this type of contract is called an evergreen contract and is very controversial. These types of contracts are stuctured to rope consumers into perpetual contracts so that it is difficult if not impossible to end a contract with them. Some states like New York are either banning or eliminating them.
