I frankly, cannot avoid it. If I stand outside with 50 sunscreen for one soccer game with my son I get a tan.
I like to go to the beach, and despite my best efforts (hat, sunscreen, umbrella) I get tan. Should I stop going? I don't think so, but this is NOT done intentionally to impress anyone, trust me.

We wanted a specific dog breed. We didn't really check the shelter - I actually think ours was closed at the time. We did try to go through a rescue group, but we had a bad experience with them and since the rescue group was charging $375, it wasn't that much more to pay $500 for a purebred. It wasn't a ritzy breeder, but our dog does actually have papers. But she's our pet, not a showdog.
I don't know if you have gotten an animal lately, but even at the shelter we paid over $100 for a cat a few years back - I'm sure dogs are more. And the rescue groups are not any cheaper.
I have gotten animals in all different ways - a store ($30 for a cat in the late 80s), off the street (a stray in our neighborhood in the late 90's, who then had kittens and my roommate and I kept a kitten), through the SPCA (foster cat program, pretty sure we paid over $100 for that) and the shelter (see above). I really don't think buying a dog for our family from a breeder once makes us wasteful, stupid people.
But, seriously, show me where you are getting any animal for less than $100 these days....unless it is a box of kittens on the corner that says free.

I don't think people usually have home services as a status symbol.
If you hate your neighbor so much, and pay so much attention to what they are doing, or are maybe constantly reminded that your penis is small or how your mother didn't love you by your neighbor's big, new house - I would suggest you move instead of trying to make trouble.

I have to agree on the other stuff--no big logos, your clothing really shouldn't be a walking billboard for a designer. Labels belong on the inside. But if you like expensive stuff (and you can afford it), more power to you. I don't think everyone does things to impress others.
Oooh, I forgot one. I don't highlight my hair or get mani/pedis to impress, I do it because I look better that way! Nobody wants to see scraggly nails and my gray hair!

12:48 here. My purebred rescue cost $350. THat's the fee to help sustain the organization that rescued her. I guess I'm stupid?
