Liberals arent the one's stripping money from college budgets because they don't like that college students are being assigned certain books.

You can only be free to live your life the way conservatives think you should live. They make up crazy conspiracy theories about sharia law infiltrating the states and then they are the first ones to start imposing religious codes in the law. They are so filled with hate for gays, for immigrants, for people of other races (mr. Bundy being the latest example). My kid got in to C of c and chose elsewhere. I wish he had gone just to join the fight. State lawmakers should let teachers teach.

I actually think it's liberals hwo are afraid of free speech - especially from those they don't agree with.

I went to CofC ten years ago and didn't encounter racism and xenophobia in any students or faculty, but certainly the southern city was a bit of a culture shock for me. I will say that I arrived with a bit of a NE chip on my shoulder, but the south grew on me after a time. I'm seriously dismayed by this article and hope the students and faculty will change the course of things.

We were always a but weary of her going to school in the South (herself included) for these reasons. Now I'm glad she's not there since I wouldn't want her school to be guided by someone who has no clue about education. Why in the world would any reputable college hire someone to lead it who has never worked in the education field!?

McConnell's hiring was the fault of the state legislature. The faculty and student body are pretty upset.

I'm the PP. I know it's the state legislatures fault. My original post wasn't written too well (probably distracted), but I still can't believe this type of thing is happening…Separation of church and state, anyone….? Again, SO glad my kid has enough sense at the tender age of 18 to stay FAR away from the South. Sorry, Southerns, don't mean to offend, but if you're truly enlightened you would recognize some of the problems that continue to fester in the the South. FWIW - I would probably say the same thing about some areas of the Midwest and I grew up there!

Please. We just toured Southern schools, though not C of C. Beautiful campuses, great weather, and the people were so much friendlier than in the North. There's a reason why the Sunbelt keeps growing.

Please. The beautiful campuses and nice weather do not make up for the racism and xenophobia that still exist - often times very openly. The South is fine if you are white, straight and preferably a little wealthy. Also, beware of the Southern friendliness….they may be smiling to your face while planning your destruction behind your back (something told to me by a number of native Southerns). I'm not so sure about the Sunbelt growing since I don't have any statistics about that in particular, but hopefully if it grows and expands in terms of the types of people living there some of these negatives will soften with time. Probably not in my lifetime, though.

+1. Imagine going to U. Mass. when Billy Bulger was president and covering up for his criminal brother.

2. A public university should not be in the business of deciding which books, plays, or films are appropriate! Goodness gracious, whatever happened to separation of church and state? These are obvious Christian/Catholic values being imposed on the students at CofC and USC Upstate. I'm glad I don't live in SC so my will kids have better in-state choices for higher education.

What? They don't have a football team.

Friendlier is in the eye of the beholder. We don't all agree.
