I like little soft unstructured jackets. Not as formal as a blazer, but kicks it up from a cardigan.

Also, a suit jacket dressed down a bit--sometimes I do black pants, pinstripe suit jacket with a graphic tee and a big scarf.

I would never wear heels to work. I wear heels to parties and weddings. For work, cute maryjanes or other flat shoes; sandals in summer.

I don't see how you can spend only $250 a year on work clothes, unless you don't make more than $50K a year. A pair of decent work pants is $70.
