Subject: red shirting a December boy?
Don't most states require that a child be enrolled in school by age 6? So how can you plan to red shirt an almost 6 year old without some other plan for him to attend school later that year or home school?

I do think that sometimes schools say one thing and do entirely another. I'd like to avoid a school that would problem solve a sibling admission issue by extreme redshirting. My guess from dealing with admissions offices is that they would say - "we can't discuss individual cases, but generally...." not particularly helpful to me.

How could I ask - I don't know the parents or kid in question! The mom who told me about the situation is on a sports team with the kid's older sibling so I'm not sure she even knows the family well enough to ask. Perhaps I should have just posed it as a hypothetical - I'm really just asking because my toddler daughter will be going to school at some point and I'm wondering if it is really possible she could have kids 18 months older than her in the class. seems nuts to me.
Well, if that really is your concern, wouldn't the more appropriate course of action be to ask schools that you're applying to what their policies are on redshirting? It seems like worrying about some child you don't know and whose situation isn't entirely clear to you is wasted energy.

That is a good point. I'm guessing that details have gotten lost in the game of telephone because no one has come out and said that yes, schools are willing to redshirt a december bday. It seemed so ridiculous to me, but then again, red shirting a may birthday seems ridiculous to me!
