Regarding my hair, I do not. Lol.

I have had wonderful results and horrid results.

The best part of getting your hair done at these places is they don't charge you very much.

The worst part is it takes three times as long as a regular salon.

This is what I do- I pay $15 for a cut and color.. a box to do at home is $8 and I can't cut my own hair (they also style)... I know the teachers by now so it's rather risk free- they did ahve to fix two colorings like 1.5 yrs ago so it made my visit close to 3 hours (which is how long it used to take at my former uppity salon).

Just because your stylist was "impressed" does not mean she can't tell its a home dye job. It just means you do a good job for an amateur. Look I totally understand the affordability issue which is why I used to dye my own hair at home but it got to a point where it was tedious, messy and my hair started looking dry and the color was "flat". I deserve the indulgence at the age of 48....and now I can afford it. But if affordability is an issue, give it a go!!

When I was younger I used to ONLY get my hair professionally colored professionally since I had highlights and no gray hair so I only had to have it done 3 to 4 x a year.

Fast forward today. I am 45 now and am 95% gray. My hair is black (err...rather was black) and grows rather quickly, so now I need to color the roots every 3 weeks. There is no way I can afford to pay a professional to get my hair colored every 3 weeks so I have to do it myself.

I agree, the result is not the same as a salon job, but it has to do.

I can usually tell though a salon dye job from an at-home dye job. The quality of color and the technique. A professional dye job just looks better and well done. A home color just looks cheap.

What irks me are those haircolor ads in magazines that show J Lo or Beyonce and feature them wearing L'Oreal haircolor. Yeah..Right. Like they use at home hair color. Beyonce doesn't even color her hair. She only wears hair extensions.

I did the same thing to my hair. I ended up going to a professional to have them undo my mess.

You should do your roots first so the dye has the most time to work there. Once your roots are done then apply color to the rest of your hair and let it process for whatever amount of time the directions say- over processing your hair only damages it. After you wash out the dye make sure you use shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair (I really like the nexus line). Also, if you ever mess up the color you can use super cheap shampoo to strip the color out of your hair.
