For me it isn't just my MIL and FIL. Obviously I must be respectful to them. My SIL is a nightmare and I just don't enjoy my time with the family when she is around. Inlaws won't make plans without her since she is divorced, childless, etc.

Not for the in laws but for stepmom's family. Stepmom has a wonderful SIL and a horrible sister. Only their mother will speak to horrible sister when she comes to family events. Wonderful SIL's daughter and I are a few years apart and turn every family gathering into a drinking game. Both stepmom and wonderful SIL are aware and will attempt to egg us on. They say it's better than us outright refusing to be in the same room as horrible sister.

My ILs are fine, but my family? Five Xanax please

Yup. Xanax all the way, but thankfully didn't see them this easter. I actually got the xanax just for the in law visits.

We actually told ILs we had plans for Easter that didn't include them (they only asked last week what we were doing) and the drama that ensued ... oh, brother.

Sounds just like my experience with my in laws. Sorry to hear I'm not the only one- best to all of you who deal with this! It is not fun, esp when it happens on holidays.

DH is wonderful in spite of his parents not because of them. I see this more every year.

Buy you had met his parents before you married I assume? Were you thinking they would disappear after the wedding?

ILs were well-behaved until the kids came along and DH's siblings moved out of state and now the burden (and guilt) is on us to fulfill all family duties. At least in their minds it does.

Also the older they get the more juvenile they behave. Personal offense, hissy fits, silent treatments.

We give them space when they get like this and then MIL starts with the guilt trips about how they're not always "going to be around" and we should spend time together "While we can." Please, that woman has been dying for the last 12-15 years.

My wife is a wonderful and amazing woman, not because of, but in spite of her parents. She doesn't pop Xanax when visiting my parents, but then again my parents aren't insufferable narcissists. We allow the inlaws to visit because they are generally not horrible as grandparents and we have set boundaries. Otherwise the visits would be 1-2x per year.
