We were inbound for Powell and opted for Barnard. At the time 3 years ago the school had terrible test scores although the demographics were similar to Barnard. The gentrifiers are moving up out of Columbia Heights/Adams Morgan, but like Bancroft in Mount Pleasant the school performance lags newcomers expectations considering how much they spent on housing. I wish the very best for Powell don't get me wrong. But Stokes is a safer bet.

There is hype about Powell but people need to remember that one or two years ago, most people hadn't heard of Powell, and many said "no way would I send my kid there." Has it really, significantly, substantially changed so much, beyond kindergarten? Stokes has better scores and a proven reputation.
Stokes is popular because it's one of the more established language immersion schools. But the scores aren't that
great. Only 55% are proficient or advanced for reading on CAS and 45% for math. http://issuu.com/pcsb/docs/dcpcsb_pmf_2013/139.
Powell is about the same and rising, with more families coming in than Stokes, where siblings take nearly all the seats.
