OP, I also hate pie. Any type of pie i.e. chicken pot pie, etc. I was once in your situation and just very politely said, "oh no thank you MIL. I'm actually not a huge fan of pie. I know, I'm weird, I always drove my mom crazy at Thanksgiving." She followed up asking me what kind of dessert I liked and I would usually skirt the issue (didn't want her making something specifically for me or something) and say "oh well honestly I'm always so full from the delicious dinner that eating a dessert might seriously test the button of my pants!"

Then a couple of years later my SIL started dating a guy who is a true master of cheesecakes. Any kind of cheesecake (he puts Cheesecake factory to shame and by far his best was either the Grasshopper cheesecake of the banana split one) and his desserts have quickly replaced any and all pies at family gatherings.

this. OP, there is nothing wrong in telling your MIL "no thanks, I do not like pie" . it is not an offense and nothing personal to your MIL (you are not saying you don't like HER pies). I like cooking and I would be hurt if a person in my family ate something she hates for years without telling me that she hates it. a lot of people love pies, and your MIL cannot read your mind. just tell her you do not like pies and be done with it (just make clear you do not like any pie, not the one she made). in short, just be an adult

I'm with you, OP! I love dessert but I can't stand fruit pies and cobbler. It would drive me nuts if I had to eat and pretend to like it every time I ate with the in-laws.

Why is it so hard to say no thanks when offered a food??? And with a dessert, if you feel a need to make excuses, you can be too full, you can be watching your weight, you can be cutting back on sugar.

What? That's crazy. If someone had a preference, they are allowed to share it. It is not a demand that that item no longer be served. She is not saying that the sight or smell of pie is repulsive to her, just that she, personally would not like a slice, thanks.

Tell her you are cutting out dessert for awhile. Then you don't seem strange for 8 years of pie eating and it's not about her choice and your likes clashing. You're just trying to stay fit.

Thank you, I will have a small piece. Then cut it up into tiny bits and eat a few crumbs. leave the rest on the plate. Classic dieters answer and tactic -- so many very slim women do this.

Tell her you don't care for pie, but that you just adore rum cake. If she makes it like my family, you'll even be drunk when you leave
