#5 which will probably be used for #1.

Why are you doing a major renovation now? You can't afford it and you will have a baby. Do you really want NOISY construction going on while you have a little one around?

Our addition took three times as long as the estimated time. (Mainly because they damaged our house and we had to vacate for a month.)

I would hold off on the renovation.

I'd apply $4k to my student loan, spend $500 and spend the other $500 on my GF.

Geography has nothing to do with it ... it's parts of the socioeconomic spectrum that matter. Rich people in Kansas also don't get bowled over by $5k.

It's sad that in many parts of the country $5k would be a windfall and might pay your mortgage for a few months. Here, it means very little and you just toss it onto the pile which you hope will one day be large enough o actually mean something.
