Taxable income this year under 20k
Rental loss
Capital gains loss
Other losses
Mortgage deduction
Child credits
Charitable donations etc
Federal refund = $5500
DC refund = $2k
We typically break even so this year is highly unusual. We had some unusual situations and considerable deductible losses. We actually ended up with a tax liability of zero.

mortgage deduction
child credits/deduction
Owed $392 federal, MD refund of $702.
As my spouse works for the IRS, we couldn't get away with owing that much. If you owe more than $1K and are an IRS employee, you get flagged for an internal audit, you get a ding on your employee record and you have to change your withholding or pay quarterly estimated taxes for the next year. I have to religiously check our withholdings and spot check our taxes once or twice midyear to make sure we're on track.
Wow. Very interesting. Seems unfair though as if you have a lot of changes in a year you could be screwed.
