Hello. It’s quite popular topic for me too. I use old oral b toothbrush. But I decide to buy new toothbrush for my child. I used to read many reviews and decided to choose one from here https://bathroomer.org/best-electric-toothbrush-for-kids/ and I also choose The Oral-B Star Wars Battery Powered Electric Toothbrush

okay so DH has Sonicare and I have OralB. I swear his sonicare is so freaking loud that I get agitated by the loud high pitched buzzing. But he loves his Sonicare. I got OB because I love the circular brush head. When I first got it I had that same issue you mentioned with mold, and also odor (so gross), but then I started laying my toothbrush on it's side on the edge of my sink to let it thoroughly dry- sort of suspended over the sink half way in and half way out, if you can visualize it. It fixed the issue! I no longer have the issue of mold (or odor). Give it a try.

I have an OralB and have never seen a bit of mold. Now I am going to have to go look at it. I have not replaced the head yet. Should I take it off and look there??

Back to the original question...my dentist says Sonicare is not worth the extra cost.

Not worth the extra cost as compared to what? a manual? How your dentist can say this is a real head-scratcher.

I'm a dentist based in Europe and that's a question many patients ask me. The answer is: Both brands produce equally effective toothbrushes. Although there have been more than 200 clinical studies comparing those 2, most of them are conducted by Braun and Philips, so they are biased in their own direction. Main difference is in technology behind them. Some people prefer oscillating (rotating) technology of Oral B and some prefer sonic (fast vibrating) technology from Sonicare line.

In my opinion oscillating toothbrushes are less sensitive to brushing technique, that's why I prefer Oral B toothbrushes when I'm buying some for my parents and grandparents. Advantage of Oral B is also the price. Similar models from both brands cost about the same, but brushing heads from Oral B line are much cheaper.

For a better understanding, here are 2 videos comparing brushing technique of each one:

Oral B: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkdgyXHEboE
Sonicare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gjoR91BmJJQ

And here's an in-depth comparison of both brands:

I will be checking this thread daily if anyone has any question.

They are certainly much cheaper in Europe! They are crazy expensive here, but maybe Sonicare is worse.

Thanks for the inforamative post.

Mine has a timer and pauses every 30 seconds to alert me to switch parts of my mouth I am cleaning, for 2 minutes.

I have an oral b with the same timer feature and love it. I never used to brush long enough and my gums showed it. Now I always do and I don’t even have to think about it.

Good old manual toothbrush here. Haven’t had a cavity in years.

I used Sonicare as a kid when it frost came out, then on and off as an adult. I didn’t have anything resembling a cavity until after having babies. Since then I have had two very small cavities that were dealt with using air abrasion. Both happened when I was not using Sonicare. Since using it again I have not had any problems at my dental cleanings. I think anything electronic that helps you brush thoroughly and for long enough is good! Just my personal experience.

I just got the top of the line Oral B io 9. It is great. I don’t think everyone would consider it worth the price, but in my mind it is if it works. I just paid a $900 dentist bill for a mouthful of cavities for one of my kids. Never want to do that again.

People are either Sonicare or Oral-B people. It's like people are either Honda or Toyota people.

Both work well. Both have their fans.

I got an Oral B model at the periodontist. Have had it for about 5 yrs. Works for me. My dentist like Sonicare. It's to-may-to, To-mah-to.

I would only advise you NOT to get the cheapest model. I got a couple of the lowest end models for my kids and they are notably cheaper materials. I ended up paying for a high end model at the periodontist, but it has really held up and cleans up better too.

I love my Sonicare but it's 4-5 years old at this point... Also looking for advice.

Oral B is really loud and you have to remember to take the toothbrush head off each time you use it and rinse it and let it dry. If you don't, you get black mold falling out of it and into your mouth. Pretty gross.

We use Oral B. I even bought them for my kids at the recommendation of their dentist (ages 12 & 10). Since then - no cavities and their teeth are visibly cleaner. I buy replacement heads on Amazon via subscribe & save.
