PP here who said I texted the owned (and called) about taking the bird. I never got a call back so I assume she found a home for the bird. She sounded VERY young, for what it's worth.

OP here. I agree with you. Seems so unnecessarily harsh to put the poor bird down.

A captive bird like that would stand ZERO chance of surviving if set free. It would either die of exposure or (more likely) become a larger bird's dinner. Better to take it to the animal shelter if you want to give it a fighting chance for survival. Poor bird.

But disagree about letting the bird fly free. Parakeets are flock animals. One alone is hawk food. It's like dropping one of us in the middle of the desert and saying, "go roam free!"

People do that with ducks--but unless they are true mallard ducks, the other breeds of duck have been bred, say, for breast meat--so they are breast-heavy and cannot fly. So people get sick of their pet duck and dump them in a pond and when it freezes, the duck dies. People are horrible at times, in not only do they abandon their charges, but also that they don't do their homework so they are cruel in their abandonment.

Jesus this makes me angry. Why the hell wouldn't the person at least bring their bird to the shelter, so he/she can be adopted?
