Marriott, Residence Inn, Omni (for the resorts) Hampton Inn for decent night's sleep and breakfast on a road trip

It can vary tons by chain. Best option usually is to go with whatever has been renovated most recently and is within a certain range.

We originally became Marriott Rewards members many years ago when they were the first chain to go 100% non-smoking. But we like how they're treated us over the years (we travel frequently) and the facilities are more standardized and less likely to be really crappy. Our limited experiences with Choice properties is that they seem to rate 1-6 out of 10 for quality whereas Marriott tends to be 4-7 out of 10 for the middle tier hotels. We opt for Residence Inn and Towneplace Suites most often because we like having 2BR suites where the kids get one room and we get the other, plus we have the kitchen and free breakfast.
