That's a wee bit melodramatic. Please save your pity for someone far more deserving (i.e., homeless children who are not reading at grade level). Blacks have been graduating from Ivy League universities for well over a hundred years (including those blacks that graduated pre-emancipation). He will certainly encounter racism, but who hasn't? I'm sure it will be much easier for him to handle others' bigotry with his HYP degree. Don't worry folks, this kid will be just fine...and probably more successful than your children (based on traditional societal measures).

Sounds like a great kid and the schools he is leaning towards (Penn or Harvard) sound well suited to his aspirations of a career in finance.

Ah, here we go. The microaggression that isn't so micro on DCUM.

I actually hate the term and the need to point it out, but i'm glad someone volunteered a demonstration.

The only sad thing about this story is that he'll get a lot more of this hatefu BS at any of those schools (maybe not Brown) and it will definitley impact his ability to succeed.

I don't understand your comment. Do you think he's not qualified to attend those colleges?

Also of course you knew he was a minority because the title says Banneker high school.

I don't live in DC proper and have never heard of the high school.

This forum is for discussion of DCPS and DC Public Charter schools. If you don't live in DC, I am not sure why this forum would be of interest to you. But, one thing of which I can assure you is that we are not interested in your racial prejudices. If you find the success of a student "sad" because that student is black, you probably need to find another forum.

Ahem. It is not "common" for any one student to get accepted into five Ivies.

I understand your point PP, but reality is that this is common for other races.

I feel sad for the outstanding young man who's being scapegoated on DCUM because he's African American. We should be celebrating him and the white and Asian students whom've made it. And then we should go into our own backyard and make sure we're a part of a solution that makes it unnecessary to single out "outlier" black and brown kids. Don't hate this young man. Congratulate. And let's make him our standard.

I feel sorry for the five equally qualified white kids who got rejected so this sob story could play out.

So this outcome is only acceptable if he is white?

Not at all, but it's obvious this story wouldn't get headlines if it was a white or Asian boy. Seriously

So true. I wonder if this story will get the attention from the parents who choose SWW etc.

No, it's sad because it confirms the idea that colleges only get excited about qualified minority applicants.
