I'm 50 and came from the generation that cooked in the sun with baby oil. However, I had fair skin and couldn't do this so i started wearing sunscreen as a teen (we called it sunblock back then). Fast forward a few decades and I look MUCH younger than my high school friends.
But the real reason to wear sunscreen is to prevent cancer.
While the sun can age prematurely genetics also plays a huge role.
