-Any Oliver Sacks
-The Great Influenza: the story of the deadliest pandemic in history by John M. Barry (1918 flu pandemic - fascinating, and eye opening about why the recent flu pandemic scares get people so worried)
-Any Stephen Jay Gould

Here's some non-fiction and biographies I liked:

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
Team of Rivals (lincoln book) by doris kearns goodwin
Katherine Graham's A Personal History
Into the Wild by John Krakauer (also his other books, Into Thin Air and Under the Banner of Heaven are great)
Beyond the Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo
A Random Walk Down Wallstreet by Burton Malkiel (a much more interesting read than you would think, and great as an investing primer for English majors)


Love this PPs recommendations. Have to read Team of Rivals now.

A Tale for the Time Being (fiction, which some non-fiction stuff mixed in re: Japan tsunami, etc)

The warmth of other suns will keep you busy. Nonfiction, but reads like fiction. Fascinating book about migration of black people from the South to the North and West.


Devil in the White City - Two stories intertwined in one nonfiction book, a serial killer and the development of the World's Fair in Chicago (both happening simultaneously.

Fiction - A Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry, Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon

Little Princes: One Man's Promise to Bring Home the Lost Children of Nepal

Really easy read, but really good!

I'm no good at fiction. I teach 8th grade, I am immersed in the land of young adult novels. If you want really quick, easy reads in that category, I have plenty of recommendations!

We must have similar tastes! I read The Corrections when it was published and it rose to the top of my recommendation list, but The Goldfinch (which I haven't quite finished) may have surpassed it as my favorite contemporary novel.
