That would be gross but that is not what happens with a newborn. Basically, after they are circumcised you put a little petroleum jelly around the red mark, lay a gauze pad over it and diaper as usual. Repeat with each diaper change. Mine didn't seem especially bothered by it at all. And newborns sleep a lot...they really aren't aware of it.

Oh, there was an OP? I thought we were just trying to see who could call the other side "Neanderthals" the most.

We are in the same boat as OP. Had to go to Ped a few times because it was swollen and painful. Put some cream on, and it was fine in a few days. I'd rather do that several times in his childhood than subject him to a surgical procedure. It may be just cutting off a piece of skin, but it's still surgical. And I just can't subject my kid to unnecessary surgery for something that is not life threatening or will drastically improve quality of life. He can make that decision for himself when he's older.

You're a little sensitive. Circ is recommended for some conditions. If a tight foreskin doesn't respond to other treatment, it may need to be circ'd.

No one is saying that everyone needs to be circ'd. No one is saying that babies should be circ'd.

Some guys need it, though. it's a medical procedure. Get over it.

There's nothing for me to 'get over' nor am I sensitive. If you'd read my post, you'd see that I never said there was never any reason to circumsize. I said the poster I was no reason to assume that the OP's son needed to be circumsized.

Cutting half the skin? It is a flap of skin, and the foreskin is not sensitive. You can argue that having the head exposed reduced sensitivity...I do not know the answer. Having had multiple major surgeries, circumcision is not really surgery....you are removing a bit of loose skin. You are not cutting into flesh.

I am circumcised -- religious reasons. If I had a boy, they would be circumcised.

The reason why the Torah mandates circumcision is probably hygienic -- if you look at most of the rules in the Torah, they make sense from a sanitary perspective 2500 years ago.

Circumcision is more sanitary...It of course is possible to clean the penis such that it is just as clean, but any time you have moist skin covering other moist skin, you can have various infections: bacterial, fungal, and yeast.

Meanwhile, the other option is to leave your son's penis as is. I personally have handled more than my share of uncircumcised dicks, and have never witnessed any hygiene issues (that could be attributed to the foreskin, at least...) STD's, infection, and cancer are risks whether you/your partner has a foreskin or not - to me, the benefits of opting to stay intact far outweigh potential benefits of circing. And really, if humans weren't meant to have foreskins, evolution would have taken care of it a long time ago. (And for all you creationists out there, if men weren't meant to have foreskins god wouldn't have put them there, I suppose!)

I just can't buy the "but it's cleanerrrr! and also STD's!" argument. Teach your kid to clean his business and don't stick it anywhere without protection, foreskin or not.
