I used this for years and was also very concerned when I read about these issues. I use paraguard now and am very happy. Prefer no hormones.

I had very heavy, very long periods, so Mirena was the better choice for me. My periods are very light now, and my quality of life is SO much better. No side effects that I've noticed. Insertion was painful but quick and only mild cramping. I had it inserted in the morning and went in to the office in the afternoon.

It will be 5 years this summer, and I'm absolutely getting another one.

+1, except I've had mine for 3 years.

I had mirena for about two years. The hormones didn't bother me at all, probably because it is such a tiny amount and it stays localized whereas pills are systemic so you can have a lot more side effects. I stopped having my period which was great, I did have some cramping when I would have had my period, nothing too severe. Insertion was painful. I would definitely recommend it. Oh and my sex drive stayed the same as far as I could tell, I've always been a couple of times a week kind of person and that didn't change.

This thread is helpful. I have the same question as OP. If I may add a question, does Mirena affect sex drive?

Para guard is awesome for me! Slightly heavier periods and a few have been more painful, but nothing too serious. I didn't have bad periods to begin with though.

I had the mirena after my first child. I thought it was great. It didn't affect my BF supply and after about 6 months i stopped having periods all together. Kept it in for 5 yrs and after removal it took about 4 months to get pregnant. After this child i got the mirena again. Unfortunately it perforated my uterus and i had to have surgery to get it removed. I opted to have a new mirena placed during the surgery. The chances are so slim of it happening (In the 10+ yrs my OB has been inserting them, i was only the 2nd case of perforation) that i decided to take the bet that it wouldn't happen again to me. I've had it for 6 months since and it has been fine. No periods again and BF supply still good.

I love the Paraguard. If you don't have a grandfathered plan, your insurance should cover it with no copy or deductible under ACA rules.
