I'm one of the PPs, trying to get over my fear of the weight room too. Went in with a friend today and am going to fly solo on Saturday Thanks for this thread, OP, and good luck!

I'm the OP and wanted to send a little update to this thread.

After all of the encouragement and advice on this thread and from present_tense (http://www.presenttensefitness.com/), I have started following the program in the New Rules for Lifting for Women book. I watched youtube videos before going in, asked a couple of friendly people at the gym if I needed help, and am following the workouts in the book. Nobody at the gyms cares what I'm doing so I don't feel self-conscious, and I've found it's not so hard once I just get in there and try.

Thanks all!

I live east of the park, close to 16th St Heights. My gym is in Chevy Chase DC.

I'm in NoVa. We could meet up at a rec center if you're inclined.

I read a lot and watched beginner videos on YouTube. What I read and watched included instructions on not hurting yourself. I had some light dumbbells and practiced when I was alone to get the basic movements.

Walking into a room full of muscle guys can be unnerving. I usually just listen to my music and ignore everyone. Everyone else was a beginner at one time. Get out there and do it. That's the only way it gets easier.[/quote]

Totally. And once you get used to it you won't care at any gym. Remember, most people are at the gym because they want to work on themselves. They aren't paying attention to you.

Likewise.

My gym has great early morning bootcamps and small group training - the bootcamps are a great mix of cardio and strength. And no, more than just five pound weights. The small group training is very flexible and definitely teaches you your way around the gym and all sorts of options - really focuses on weights. Rock Creek Sports Club (http://rockcreeksportsclub.com/)- just over the District Line - same shopping center as Parkway deli.
