Then middle school magnet, which was not very far away. Honestly, both student and family are a little burned out on the demands of the magnet. It's not all its cracked up to be. Very restrictive and a large administrative hassle in many ways, which isn't really made up for by the substance of the program.

High school magnets are too far away and offer program too similar to what is available at home high school, so returning home for HS.

Which magnet?

CAP is only offered to DCC students, right?

Or is it open to COSA cases where students tested into Eastern, for example?[/quote]

Yes. CAP is open to students who ATTEND DCC schools, which includes kids in the Eastern and Takoma magnets. A fair number of CAP kids are Eastern grads who live outside the DCC.

2 of my kids went to HGC, one went on to Takoma's magnet & then onto Blair. The commute is long, but my kids wanted to do it! They both are dedicated hard workers and wanted what the magnets could offer. My younger went to home middle, while it's fine, not nearly as good as the magnet. Is there a lot more work and harder classes- you betcha! That's why my kid wanted to be there. Is it for everyone- of course not! Do they take only the top kids- nope. Plenty of great people don't get in. Do they learn learn more, yes indeed!

Our 5th grader is graduating from the HGC this year and will be attending the local middle school in the fall. DC did not apply to any magnet middle schools.

The magnet middle schools are too far away for us. DC would need to be on a bus at 6:15 - a full hour earlier than for the local school. I'm just not willing to have DC spend 2+ hours on a bus everyday, because then DC would miss out on other hobbies (and sleep!).

The HGC elementary school experience has been a mixed bag for DC. We didn't like the school where the HGC was located, or the principal, or some of the HGC teachers. It was a hard adjustment for DC.

There is no such thing as a "middle school highly gifted center." There are two competitive-entry magnets: Takoma Park Middle Math/Science/Computer Science, and Eastern Middle School Humanities.

My child went to the TPMS magnet.

There actually is such a thing as a middle school highly gifted center. There is one set for the downcounty (Takoma Park MS for math/science/computers and Eastern MS for humanities) and one set for the upcounty (both at Roberto Clemente MS).

No, there isn't. There are subject-area-specific magnets, the ones you cite - which are the same as the ones I cited above.

The program at Roberto Clemente MS is "the Upcounty Center Program for the Highly Gifted".

The elementary school programs are "the Elementary Center Programs for the Highly Gifted".

HGC, HGC.

Ok.

And TPMS and Eastern: Magnets. Not HGC, magnets.

And in any case, unlike the elementary school programs, they are subject-matter specific, which makes them altogether different.

FWIW, Clemente is a "double magnet", i.e. it houses one program identical to Takoma MS Math and Science Magnet and another program identical to Eastern's Humanities Magnet. Students must apply separately to each program. I don't think there's any dual enrollment in both magnets at Clemente, but they are both housed at the same school; that's why they call Clemente a "Upcounty Center Program for the Highly Gifted".

But, Clemente as an "HGC" is different from the elementary HGCs. At the elementary level, the HGC students are all grouped together for math, reading, social studies, and science, with possible breakouts into subgroups in those classes. There may be a few non-magnet students included in magnet math, but this really depends on the numbers of non-magnet, higher math students at each elementary.

By contrast, at the middle school level at Clemente, the "magnet" students are not grouped with each other for all their classes, like at the elementary level. The humanities magnet students take their core humanities classes together. The math/science magnet students take their core classes together. But, otherwise for the non-magnet classes, the students are mixed with the "comprehensive" program students. Humanities students may still end up with a significant proportion of magnet students in their math class, because the humanities students are generally bright and often accelerated in math also. Similarly, the math/science magnet students may end up group with a lot of other magnet students in advanced or GT English, but their will be other non-magnet students as well.

So, in a way, you are both right and both wrong.
