Also a Texan, and I second his opinion. I've tried most of those mentioned here.

Common red flags: yellow cheese, ground beef, flour tortillas, peas in the rice…and don't get me started on the tamales that are way too sweet. I think most of the "Tex Mex" places around here are run by folks from Central and South America. I'm sure they have fine cuisine where they're from, but it's not Tex-Mex.

^^^and I know OP asked for best in DC, but Mi Rancho is close enough. It's a 10 minute walk from the DC line.

If you want the best, go to Mi Rancho in Silver Spring.

Hands down, the winner.

Agree with the above, food is generally pretty mediocre and they all seem to be the same, Guapos, Cactus Cantina, Uncle Julio's, Austin Grill, Mi Rancho the key is don't pay too much and get good and decent priced margaritas. There is a place on Capitol Hill that works well, La Lomita Dos, decent priced food and margaritas, and very family friendly but definitely not worth driving to, just if you are close. I also agree that Rosa Mexicano is not worth the price and have heard that Mi Cocina is even worse, but not been there.

District Taco is good - locations in Arlington, downtown (Metro Center) and Capitol Hill. Seems like more of a carryout place, but the Arlington location has an ABC license.

Yes, I was so looking forward to it and what a disappointment! Bland and boring. And up the street, Rosa Mexicano is way overpriced for not very good food. Oh, and drinks where the alcohol seems to be dispensed with an eyedropper.
