Not to be crass, but wouldn't he maybe inherit some of that huge money anyway? How much do they need him to succeed?

Unless the business is somehow significantly related to his background, if I were him, I would stick with my job.

Sometimes you have to jump. Is it truly impossible get back into it or would it just suck to do so (ie could he go back to school, re do a residency or fellowship or move to a rural area). If yes to any of those and he is willing to do that if necessary then I vote yes. Of course you have to be on board.

So your DH likes being a doctor or not?

He loves it. Loves family , too. A lot of pressure headed his way, and medicine is changing thanks to Obama and the democrats: the practice of medicine, doctor-patient relationship, not just money.

I don't know why people think every post is a troll post. It's weird.

I would have a HARD time throwing away a 600k job for an uncertain future. Instead, I would live well below my means, retire early, and enjoy my forties or fifties on!

Potential. Current evaluations on private equity market. Trajectory.

Unstable compared to our current situation. Add in the family factor, and the burning of the medicine bridge.

Thus, the post.

He is talking about quitting to join a startup that will pay half income but have substantial equity working for his father. His family has a business which is predicted to sell for 9-10 figures in the next 5-10 years, but nothing is guaranteed.

If he quits medicine for this job, he can never go back.

Any thoughts? Similar situations? 600k guaranteed (and growing) with 16 weeks vacation or move with lower income, higher potential (8-9 figures) but much more instability.

Sorry OP, you need to provide more details. What is his specialty? 600K is a lot for his age and experience. Why can he "never" go back to medicine? All of this do not add up...

Physicians can't leave a practice for a few years and then step right back in. That's now how it works. Staying on top of latest techniques, procedures, and maintaining licensure with cme is key.

16 weeks is what we have now.

10 figures will be family biz potential.

OP here: yes. Think super sub-specialized. He values time off over maximizing money.

Ha. This is still complete bs.

OP here: No, it's not. This is his 1099. He is sub specialized, but values time off compared max money.

Look up mgma numbers for medical specialties here:
