There were definitely several signs and I feel like they made her look tired and defeated in this episode. Plus they killed off her first fiance, I felt like that was a weird thing to do. Also what about the reference they made of the kids doing so many thing with Robin, maybe she steps up and becomes a huge part of the kids lives after the mother goes.
But I think you could be right re Robin. Does anyone remember the episode where Robin found out that she cannot have kids? Yet didn't the episode hint at something else? I didn't see last night's episode--am a season behind. But I recently saw an episode where they initially made it seem like Robin & Barney were talking about adopting kids, but it was a fake out.
Now that I think about it--they always show scenes of Lily and Marshall in their 50s/60s, but never Ted all grey. Or am I wrong? I can only think of beach house scenes, but those didn't actually happen.

ooh, this is a good theory. all along the scenes with the kids have just been them on the couch, listening to the dad, which I always thought was kinda strange (i.e. he's never talking to hem in the park or a restaurant or on vacation). it would totally make sense that these are all videos he made.
