OP why don’t you be a good neighbor and push the cans up to their house?

I'm not so sure, it's possible they will invade OPs home with garbage and lead her to have a mental break/commit suicide/burn down the house. You might want to consider moving.

If you go through the HOA, I wouldn't worry about a fine right away (I'm the poster who said I've gotten letters for cans out overnight). If they're anything like mine, the offenders will get a notice stating that what they're doing is not allowed, and outline the consequences for further offenses. Then they'll know.

Thanks, I think I'll try the HOA first. I don't really want to get them fined. As a mom, my priority is that the sidewalks should be passable so the kids aren't forced to step off the sidewalk onto the street. It's a pain for me, but at least I'm always aware to check for oncoming traffic.

I haven't introduced myself to our new neighbors yet, so really didn't want our first interaction to be me complaining about their trash cans.

OP here. I've done this at least once or twice. They just roll them back out to the sidewalk as if they think that's the appropriate place to keep them. I get that the patios are small in our community, but everyone else manages to keep their trash cans on their own lots and off of the public sidewalk.

I think we may have the same neighbors. What is the name of your community?

My guess is the renters are thinking - hey we don't want our stinky trash can on our patio, so we will leave it out here. Maybe they don't use that particular sidewalk.

Is it actually blocking the sidewalk? If so, I'd leave a note to kindly ask them to move it. You can share with them the link to the counties website that says they need to remove their cans from the curb within 24 hours (link below):

Trash cans left out all week make the neighborhood look junky, plus they obstruct the sidewalks for runners, walkers, people with wheelchairs, strollers, etc. The sidewalks in Ballston are actually heavily used, and it's not always practical to just step off onto the street or into a yard to walk. People with common sense and courtesy would take their trash cans in after pickup and not put them out again until the night before.

This exactly why HOAs are a bad idea. I suppose if you like being nannied and making sure other people conform to your ideas of order, HOAs are great. But really, who cares if a trash can is left out?
