Its easier to get the stuff out of the cart and from under it to put it on the conveyor belt. Thats why we do it, especially if we have young children in tow who are sitting in the cart.

And my pet peeve at the grocery store is when the self-checkout lanes are open (knock on wood) let's say there are four of us in those lanes. Three of them will not work right and require human intervention taking longer than it would at the cashier-staffed registers. Off goes the 'alarm' at lane 1 and after a few minutes, someone goes to help lane 1. Off goes the self-checkout alarm at lane 2. While that person waits, off goes the alarm on self-checkout lanes 4 and 5...etc. Sucks.
