Luckily ours have ignored our 2 leather recliners (Eames & Ekornes). They use their scratching posts but have, however, liked the fabric sofa & chairs, so I've basically decided not to buy anymore expensive furniture.

And after a while you can just turn it off (or the air will run out) and the cat will still be afraid of the can so will stay away.

This really made me laugh. I haven't done this with her before (she is really an easy cat) but might try a water bottle or air can.

The sticky sided tape -- if I try that, how long should it take before I can take it off the sofa? It wouldn't be a good permanent solution. Was the scratching post in the middle of the room a tall one or a flat one?

I am not going to declaw the cat.
