I have also made the Betty Crocker one and the top layers are always sliding over and the frosting is NEVER smooth around the sides with all the lumps/edges of each layer.
That being said, it was delicious, did not require as much food coloring as you think, and people were super impressed

Will a cake cook properly with no yolks?

Yes, I make egg-free cakes all the time.
To get even layers you need to measure out the batter. The gel type of food coloring will give you richer, more vibrant colors (and it doesn't take as much food coloring). I would advise against store-bought fondant. Plain fondant does not taste very good. Marshmallow fondant is pretty easy to make and is delicious!

They have the Duff cake mixes and even some pre-made fondant at Giant also.

That's a brag? I would be disappointed if my kid wanted the most boring slice of cake.

I've seen a 3 or 4 homemade ones and they all looked pretty close to the picture. None of them were a runny mess or anything.

We did this and it was the best cake ever. (Get it at Wegmans)

I did this, but with cupcakes. I used a white store bought cake mix and mixed my colors in different bowls using gel food coloring. I used about a teaspoon of each color, and they turned out really cool. Kind of psychedelic. Anyway, the kids loved the cupcakes because when they bit into them, all these vibrant colors were visible.

I've made this cake:

I just used regular white cake mix and eggs. The colors were beautiful.

I'm 20:43. 20:45 is right about green and blue looking a lot alike. I actually ended up remaking the blue layer to have greater contrast.

We couldn't taste it. Use the gel coloring and make it from scratch. It's not like you are eating it daily.
