Ha. When I first saw the video I actually caught my breath because...it was like watching ME in that car with my old boyfriend nearly 30 years ago! I agree with PP's points here. We've had all sorts of talks with my 9 yo DS about what his body is doing, how he is starting to feel about girls, relationships, etc. Yo'd be surprised, Really? poster! We go into slightly less detail with our almost 8 yo DD, but once she starts asking, we'll be providing that information to her. The tricky part is trying to cover these topics when the 5 yo is not within earshot!

And yes, I would take my 8 yo DD to a Katy Perry concert. My 9 yo DS, I'm not so sure I'd take him. He might have a heart attack if he sees her scantily clad!

Most girls I know have started puberty by 11 or 12, so they most likely will start hearing about sexual topics from their peers or even having to deal with hormones and the feelings they cause by around that age. I personally would want to have started talking about issues related to sex and relationships in an age appropriate way well before they are blindsided by their first crush, their period, their friends giving them bad information, or whatever. That doesn't mean giving graphic details, but explaining what sex is and that the lyrics mean the singer is having strong feelings for a boyfriend or girlfriend that mean she wants to do some things that are not really a good idea at her age seems reasonable to me. I think every parent has to decide when that type of discussion seems right for their own child.

I remember hanging around the neighborhood with my other eight year old cohorts singing Madonna's "Like A Virgin." Then my older brother asked, "Do you even know what that means?" and proceeded to explain. My response? "Ewww, that is so gross! Why would anyone write a song about that?!" and went on my merry way, continuing to sing the song.

Point is, kids don't care.
