THIS. Also, when Conan started, he took a while to get off the ground (as any new show), but he then took off, once it happened. Conan is by far more talented, funny and intelligent (Harvard grad) - I think Jay tried to allude tho that in closing. Alas, too little too late.

I really resent Jay's pass the torch sh*t. Its nonsense. But Conan gave it back to him, in more ways than one. Last night, supposedly Conan said that NBC will be covering the Olympics, the only show able to "carry the torch". He followed that he was allowed one, and the audience gave him much deserved extended applause. I am paraphrasing here, and my delivery may have not allowed full justice to Conan.

Conan handled the slighting by going to a cable network. He had already moved his family to L.A. (he's an east coaster, obviously). Now, Fallon will be moving the Tonight Show back to N.Y. for the first time, if ever. It's just B.S. that NBC did not want to accommodate Conan. Conan would have saved the show, long term. There was no long term thinking on NBC's part.

I don't like Leno, but I watched. Mainly because I wondered if he could pull off a SECOND farewell show while maintaining dignity. It was blah. I did appreciate him talking about the show being Union.

The fact that the show ended with Friends in Low Places should put to rest any doubts that the show is outdated...

Leno's unfunny, and completely classless. Good riddance.

He did not "fuck Conan over." If he had any say in who the host was, obviously he would not be leaving now. I think msnbc just does not care how it treats its talent. They shuffle people around to do what is best for the bottom line.

I think he handled this situation as well as could be expected. It was obviously not how he wanted to retire.

His contract ended in 2009, but he wanted to stay. He was given a 10pm nightly show instead that sucked. He wanted 11:35, so NBC decided to give in and move Tonight Show with Conan to 12:05 (or 12:35?). Conan said no way and left. Jay got what he wanted.

OP here. I tuned in for the last few minutes to see what he would say, but the whole build up was just so fake. I mean, dude, you DID this already. You already handed over the eins and then pouted and took them back. So don't act like you're graciously passing the torch after a nice long run.

I thought it was weird when he talked about his staff members who showed him a new house they had bought or new things they had acquired, and he said "I always felt I played a bigger role in their success than they played in mine." I think he was trying to suggest that he was touched by being able to bring wealth to others, but he actually said that he did more for them than they would ever do for him. Uh, thanks?

Anyway, not a fan. Only tuned in occasionally for headlines when I remembered.

I was an avid Leno fan until he screwed Conan over. You can argue it, but that's what happened. If I was Conan, I would not have been so graceful (nor would I have cared to be).

I can't watch Jay on principle.

As far as talent, Boston people are just funny. They are good natured, good spirited people. They are not nearly as hostile as people think they are, nor are they nearly as hostile as those with pent up anger in this area. They are not mean spirited, there is much to be fateful for when you are from boston, and they know it. There is a lot of true talent in Boston. Say what you want (you're from here, so your opinion carries no weight with me), but there is something in Boston that brings out the best in the natives - the true talent, bands, comedy, etc. You don't have to like it. We don't care. Seriously. But I digress, all you have to say is (anything from the Northeast) to set people here into a frenzy. Get the popcorn.

Also, the shared difficulties, like the Marathon tragedy…and what did I always hear about when I lived there? The Blizzard of '78? LOL The students come and go (as I did) but there is the core of locals that don't run in those circles and are really tight nit. I was there a couple weeks ago and in a diner, talking to two young 20-something locals; their accents were so strong, it's just a reminder that they are in their own insulated world (saying this in a good way)
