LL Bean Katahdin jackets here, too. We've bought one every 1-2 years for my 6yo DS; younger DS wears the hand-me-downs.
I like the versatility of a relatively lighter jacket; can wear it over a shirt on medium-cold days or with multiple layers on a really cold day. They are great in rain and snow. Perfect length - they prevent snow from creeping in around his waist, but not so long as to interfere with activities.
My favorite feature is the good - the elastic band keeps it in place on his head, while the overhang keeps rain/snow from dripping onto his face. Yeah, I'm a fan
